Woman Holding a Balance, also known as Woman Testing a Scale, is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer. It is now housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. It is believed that Vermeer owned a similar painting, but was unable to locate it.
Originally, it was thought that the woman was weighing gold, but closer inspection revealed that the balance she was holding was empty. The work is associated with the iconography of the goldweigher, a symbol of holiness and earthliness. It is thought that the woman was in her early thirties, when she painted the work.
